Apple announced a new iPad mini with an 8.5-inch OLED display and an A20 Pro chip in Cupertino, California, on October 26. Preorders will open on October 28 in 36 countries and regions, including the United States, with deliveries and retail availability scheduled for November 6. U.S. prices start at $699 for the Wi-Fi model and $849 for the cellular model.

The display grows from 8.3 inches to 8.5 inches. Apple said the OLED panel offers higher contrast and more than twice the peak brightness of the previous generation. A nano-texture option is also being added to reduce glare. According to MacRumors, that option costs an additional $100 and is available only on the 256GB and 512GB models.

The Wi-Fi model is 5.4mm thick, down from 6.3mm for its predecessor. Alongside the A20 Pro chip, Apple introduced an Acoustic Display audio system that produces sound from behind the screen. MacRumors reported that the design eliminates external speaker holes.

The new iPad mini also carries an IP67 rating for water and dust resistance. Apple specified laboratory testing at a maximum depth of one meter for up to 30 minutes. The company said the resistance is not permanent and can decline with normal wear.

The 12-megapixel Center Stage front camera has moved to the landscape edge. Wireless connectivity includes Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6. Fast charging is another addition; MacRumors reported that a power adapter rated at 35W or higher can charge the device to as much as 50 percent in 30 minutes.

The tablet will come in Midnight and Starlight, with 128GB, 256GB and 512GB storage options. It supports Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil with USB-C, both sold separately. Apple announced a U.S. education starting price of $649.
