Apple announced new MacBook Pro laptops with OLED touchscreens in Cupertino, California, on October 28, introducing touch input on a Mac display for the first time. The 14-inch and 16-inch models feature a PROLED XDR display and are scheduled to launch on November 6 in 30 countries and regions, including the United States.
U.S. prices start at $2,899 for the 14-inch model with M5 Pro and $3,399 for the 16-inch M5 Pro model. Pre-orders opened on the announcement day. Apple also announced configurations with M5 Max.
Tandem OLED and touch-responsive controls
The new display uses tandem OLED technology, which stacks light-emitting layers. Apple lists peak HDR and SDR brightness of 2,000 nits, a 10,000,000:1 contrast ratio and a variable refresh rate of up to 120Hz. The display supports both P3 and Adobe RGB color gamuts. These figures are specifications supplied by Apple.
Touch input works alongside the keyboard and trackpad. Apple says macOS automatically translates touches into clicks, allowing many existing apps to handle basic touch input without an update. Additional touch features in some of the apps listed by the company are scheduled for later this year.
In an October 29 report based on Apple’s demonstrations to the media, MacRumors described menu items and window controls that enlarge when touched. A Dynamic Island replaces the display notch and presents information including Live Activities.

M5 Pro and M5 Max, with storage up to 16TB
The laptops use M5 Pro or M5 Max chips and offer configurations with up to 128GB of unified memory and 16TB of storage. Apple rates battery life at up to 24 hours based on its own testing; actual runtime varies with use and configuration.
Connectivity includes three Thunderbolt 5 ports, HDMI, an SDXC card slot, MagSafe and a headphone jack, alongside Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6. Models with M5 Pro support up to three external displays, while those with M5 Max support up to four.
Apple says customer deliveries and retail availability will begin on November 6. MacRumors noted that how the touch interactions perform in daily use can only be assessed once the laptops reach customers.
