The National Weather Service forecast severe thunderstorms across the southern and central Plains from Monday afternoon into Monday night, November 2, as a low-pressure system strengthens over the central High Plains. The Storm Prediction Center said damaging wind gusts and a few tornadoes were possible and placed parts of the Plains into the lower Missouri Valley under a Slight Risk of severe thunderstorms.

In its short-range forecast issued at 2:57 a.m. EST, the Weather Prediction Center described a developing low ahead of a deep upper-level trough over the western United States. The low was forecast to deepen rapidly while crossing the northern Plains. A cold front emerging during the afternoon was expected to bring severe thunderstorms and isolated to scattered flash flooding to the central and southern Plains.

The SPC expected increasing moisture over Texas, Oklahoma and eastern Kansas to support a growing number of thunderstorms from the afternoon into early evening. Storms could organize into several lines moving east-northeast, with a larger line expected to reach western Missouri and far eastern Oklahoma around midnight.

The extent of the tornado risk remained uncertain. The SPC said a greater threat could develop over Oklahoma or southeastern Kansas if individual storms persisted into late afternoon or early evening. It also identified north-central Texas as an area where damaging winds and a couple of tornadoes were possible later in the day and into the evening. These were forecasts of possible conditions, not reports confirming tornadoes or damage.

Heavy rain was then expected to shift ahead of the cold front toward the Mississippi Valley and Upper Midwest, with severe weather also possible in parts of the lower and middle Mississippi Valley, according to the WPC. Separately, persistent onshore winds were forecast to bring additional heavy rainfall to portions of the southern Florida Peninsula. High pressure was expected to keep much of the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic dry and mild.
