Sweden’s Andreas Almgren won his marathon debut and Kenya’s Sheila Chepkirui claimed her second women’s title at the 2026 TCS New York City Marathon on Sunday, November 1. Almgren finished in 2:06:01, while Chepkirui won in 2:24:36, adding to her 2024 victory.

Italy’s Yemaneberhan Crippa took second in the men’s race in 2:06:14, 13 seconds behind Almgren, according to World Athletics’ results. Lesotho’s Kamohelo Mofolo finished third in 2:06:26, edging defending champion Benson Kipruto by one second.

The men’s contest was decided in Central Park, where Almgren pulled away from Crippa in the closing stages. ABC7 New York reported that he became the first Swedish runner to win the event and recorded the third-fastest time in race history.

Chepkirui’s victory followed a late duel with defending women’s champion Hellen Obiri. World Athletics reported that Obiri accelerated with about 400 metres remaining, but Chepkirui matched the move and then went clear. American Jessica McClain passed Obiri near the finish to take second in 2:24:42, six seconds behind the winner. Obiri placed third in 2:24:43.

McClain became the first American woman to finish in the race’s top three since Shalane Flanagan in 2018. Kenya’s Edna Kiplagat was fourth in 2:25:42. For Chepkirui, the result reversed last year’s order, when Obiri took the title from the 2024 winner.

This year’s event marked the 50th anniversary of the marathon’s five-borough route. Almgren told ABC7 that watching last year’s race in Brooklyn, Manhattan and Central Park led him to decide to make his marathon debut in New York. A year later, he returned to those streets as a competitor and won at his first attempt over the distance.
