The National Weather Service office in Boston/Norton maintained a Flood Watch for Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts in a bulletin issued at 12:54 a.m. EST on November 6. The watch runs from 4 a.m. Friday through Saturday morning, with 2 to 4 inches of rain possible in the affected area.

The watch covers Rhode Island’s Providence, Kent, Bristol, Newport and Washington counties and Block Island, along with Bristol, Plymouth, Barnstable and Dukes counties in Massachusetts. Communities listed in the bulletin include Providence, New Bedford, Fall River, Plymouth and several Cape Cod towns.

Forecasters expect periods of heavy rain from Friday into Saturday morning. They also assigned a less than 30% chance to isolated totals of 5 to 6 inches. Those amounts are forecasts, not measured rainfall totals.

In its 2:30 a.m. forecast discussion, the weather service identified urban areas and locations with poor drainage as a particular flooding concern. It named New Bedford, Fall River, Providence and Cranston among the places vulnerable to that type of flooding, and said leaf-clogged drains could worsen the risk. The exact location of the heaviest rainfall remained uncertain.

The rain follows an extended dry spell around Boston. Local broadcaster WHDH reported on November 5 that a stretch of more than two weeks without measurable rain in Boston and other communities was ending. It said a slow-moving cold front had begun bringing rain on Thursday, with heavier, steadier rainfall expected Friday.

The weather service expects widespread rain to continue Friday night before tapering early Saturday. An upper-level low could bring another round of showers Saturday afternoon and night. High temperatures are forecast to fall into the 50s Fahrenheit on Sunday, with drier conditions expected next week.
